"Today I recorded a bunch of different voices sounding really interested in what a telemarketer would be offering." (link to mp3) - creative bastard

"It's one of those slow days today. A little while ago I put together a little application on our phone system so that when a telemarketer calls in, I can transfer them to this extension and annoy the hell out of them. I thought about it a bit more and decided to make it a little more interesting, so I can get them to hold on the line as long as possible. Today I recorded a bunch of different voices sounding really interested in what a telemarketer would be offering. Have a listen:"

Table of Malcontents

FARK.com: (2244898) Ownage! Pantera publicist's response to E! Channel's request to re-enact Dimebag's death

"Hi Beau. I’m leaving John’s comments in cause he’s a nice guy and I know this was difficult for him to send on through. I’m also blind copying a whole list of folks who will most likely copy a whole other list of folks until maybe this spreads like a good email should and end up on 100,000 websites to show the world what a collective bunch of tasteless morons you all are.

Dime’s birthday is this coming Sunday and your timing couldn’t be worse. Not that there is a good time. In fact, in honor of his birthday, I think I’ll send this around to a few of our favorite music websites who will most likely print the whole damn thing word for word, including your phone number and email. For good measure, I’m going to throw in the top 50 major daily music and some of the top TV writers in the country and why not, the weeklies as well.

I realize there is nothing anyone can do to stop E! from producing garbage like this below, as you’ve built your audience on the backs of other people’s private lives, creating some type of warped reality out of your garbage, which is merely excuses for programming on the cheap and at the expense of others.

I would like to request that you please read this out out loud to all the creative geniuses in the programming department that came up with this idea.

We have received your request to license footage on Dimebag Darrell Abbott for your upcoming production of, “25 Most Chilling Hollywood Murders.”

While we realize the average E! audience most likely has the IQ of an umbrella, they collectively are a smarter bunch than the lot of you. Your programming creativity falls somewhere to the bottom of the middle at best, and that’s saying a lot.

I ask that you all please take a moment from your busy days and close your eyes. Live out the fantasy of playing your favorite instrument onstage. Your closest friends in the world surround you, either in the band or in your crew. From one side of the stage, a man approaches. Thinking he’s a security guy or a drunk fan who’s just a bit out a line, you continue to perform. Two seconds later, he lifts his arms, aims a rifle at your brother, your best friend, your buddy and blows his brains out, not three feet from where you are. In the nanosecond it takes you to comprehend the magnitude of what just happened, he does it again…and again…and again…and again…and again…and again before taking aim and murdering additional members of your extended family as well as fans that have come to see you play. Two of your crew are shot but survive, but of course, will never be the same again.

Now imagine it’s a few years later and you turn on the TV set. Just in case you may be having at least a five minute respite from that scene that plays over and over in your head, just in case…..you flip through the channels and there it is. Again. Only with some two bit actor who thinks this is his big Hollywood break.

And please, if you don’t like that scenario, make believe it’s your child who got his brains splattered all over a stage in Ohio. And then you turn on E! Oh, the magic of television!

In case none of this appears clear enough and you need a definitive answer to your request…no. The answer if no, and on behalf of everyone that was there that night and everyone that misses him every day, you can take that no and shove it up your collective asses.

And, for your second request, yes, you can quote me on that.

Sincerely,

Jane Hoffman"
--
Here's my favorite comment on the FARK thread so far:

2006-08-22 02:58:58 PM DaCaptain19

Dear Ms. Hoffman,

In regards to your response to the E! channel request vis-a-vis one Dimebag Darrell Abott, I would like to record my strongest protests on your language and form.

My good lady, I have well served my owner in the capacity of Unbrella for many years. Many is the drop of rain and, at times, snow or even sleet that my owner has had nary a worry about, all because of my humble service.

So when you, Ms. Hoffmann, needlessly characterize the intelligence of the E! audience as that of an "umbrella" well, I think I speak for all my Umbrella brethern in saying, for shame...for shame.

We Umbrellas have more pride than to be...cast, if you will, into the putrid sludge that is the E! channel viewership.

I am sure, Ms. Hoffmann, that you will at some point in your life require the services of one of my Umbrella brethern. Knowing that you will, please take a moment next time to reflect on your words before casting dispersion upon such a worthy group of inanimate objects, by comparing them to these types of viewers.

Thank you for your consideration.

Trends: Adult Kickball Leagues Are Hot - Newsweek Periscope - MSNBC.com

"If you made it through second grade, chances are good you're familiar with kickball. Now tens of thousands of adults are forming kickball leagues for grown-ups. The World Adult Kickball Association (which charges players $60 to join) boasts 20,000 players who compete in tournaments and win prizes. Scores of independent leagues —whose players often show up for games wearing antlers, throw water balloons during a dull inning and use a Slip 'N Slide instead of a base—are holding weekly practices and games from Seattle to Brooklyn." Slashdot | The Thalamus - The Kernel in Your Mind

"'This article on Yahoo Science News describes a new finding that explains how the thalamus is used by your brain to essentially boot your brain, and provide for central processing and control of all impulses going to and from the cortex. The article describes its function as an operating system, but from the description it actually seems closer to the functions of a kernel.' From the article: 'The finding, published last week in the journal Neuroscience, changes the way scientists understand nitric oxide's role in the brain, and it also has them rethinking the function of the thalamus, where it is released. The thalamus was thought to be a fairly primitive structure, sort of a gate that could either open and allow sensory information to stream into the cortex, the higher functioning part of the brain, or cut off the flow entirely. Godwin says the new research shows it's more accurate to think of the thalamus not as a gate but as a club bouncer, who doesn't simply allow a huge rush of people to go in or no one at all, but picks and chooses whom to let in and out. Wired News: Text Games Get Film Treatment

""It was a time where, for a while, the top-selling interactive games in the world were essentially books," said Jason Scott, a Boston filmmaker and Unix system administrator who is shooting a documentary called Get Lamp about text adventure pioneers. As with his last film -- a five-and-a-half-hour documentary about bulletin boards called BBS: The Documentary -- Scott's plan is to archive a period in computing history that's at risk of drifting into obscurity.

Text-based games faded from popular culture in the late 1980s as personal computers became advanced enough to process detailed graphics and sound. But early favorites, like the underground adventure series Zork created by MIT students in the late 1970s, still have a cult following. Online repositories like The Interactive Fiction Archive and the Society for the Promotion of Adventure Games also maintain access to early works." (more at link)

How much do you have to drink to become a bigot? moxie: Carnival of Mel

Mel has apologized in a decent way (finally) but here at the Moxtopia compound, we are conducting a scientific experiment to determine exactly how much booze it takes to make a normal person become a bigot. Sure, it's a Tuesday, but we're doing this because we care.

Therefore, I, Moxie the atheist am drinking nonstop for the next 10 hours and posting every hour...the goal is to identify the amount of booze required to spew even one anti-semitic slur.

Joining me will be a good Christian, Steve H. of Hog on Ice.

Our control subject will be Aaron, who is an observant Jew.

It's the unholy trinity! (more) moxie: Carnival of Mel

CNN.com - Authors to Rowling: Don't kill Harry Potter - Aug 1, 2006

Stephen King is on the lookout in this pic for runaway vans looking to smite them asunder.

"NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Two of America's top authors, John Irving and Stephen King, made a plea to J.K. Rowling on Tuesday not to kill the fictional boy wizard Harry Potter in the final book of the series, but Rowling made no promises.

'My fingers are crossed for Harry,' Irving said at a joint news conference before a charity reading by the three writers at New York's Radio City Music Hall.

The author of 'The World According to Garp' and a string of other bestsellers said he and King felt like 'warm-up bands' for Rowling, who is working on the seventh and last book in the Harry Potter series, and who has said two characters will die.

King, who shot to fame in 1974 with 'Carrie,' said he had confidence that Rowling would be 'fair' to her hero." (more) CNN.com - Authors to Rowling: Don't kill Harry Potter - Aug 1, 2006
